Makassar's population is incredibly diverse with a amazing heritage from traders, colonizers, religious movements, and many different ethnic groups. The traditional communities are still going strong but are being joined by rapidly growing new ones. As the gateway to eastern Indonesia, it is the entry point for new ideas, new people, and new movements, some homegrown, some national and even international. This year's TEDxMakassar is taking the opportunity to hear from the leaders and founders of these communities (from a trash collector collective, to a Barongsai dance group, a knitting club, a green Makassar movement, and a traditional market seller association), to find out what their idea worth sharing is and how they are making change happen.

  • Sartika Nasmar

    Founder of the Qui Qui Knitting Group, Sartika comes from a background of counseling women. She established Qui- Qui with the motto "knitting for women's rights". Using the medium of knitting and teaching new skills to women around Makassar, she and Qui Qui also use the knitting time to educate women about sexual health and reproductive rights.

  • Wahyudin Mas'ud

    A civil servant by day, Wahyudin is passionate about urban farming. He founded the Makassar branch of of the national Berkebun (Farming) movement. He spoke about channeling young people's energy into more creative and constructive projects.

  • Hendrik Tedjo

    A Shaolin master, Hendrik is also the founder of Makassar's oldest dragon or barongsai dance group. After the ban on Chinese culture was lifted in Indonesia in 1998, Hendrik was free to start teaching young ethnic Chinese in Makassar the arts of lion and dragon dancing. He spoke of the 'human' aspects of these sacred masks and animals.

  • Erlina Ayu

    Writer, blogger, social media enthusiast, full time mom, and prolific writer. Erlina spoke on the subject of Writing with Zero Talent. She is the founder of a mother's writing group in Makassar and teaches other women how to write and create.

  • Samsul Sunduseng

    Traveller not tourist. Samsul heads a group of travel enthusiasts called Makassar Backpacker. Travelling all over the world, Samsul realized that young Indonesians lacked the support and information needed to really travel and experience the world. He also realized that Indonesia is woefully under-appreciated. He believes that Sulawesi's backyard can give any destination a run for its money and is determined everyone knows about it.

  • Risnawati S

    Growing up near/in one of Makassar's biggest landdumps, Rinsnawati understands what it means to be a trash scavenger kid, scrambling over huge mountains of garbage, not going to school, no access to health services. She now works in the Trash Scavengers Playgroup, providing education for the hundreds of children living in the dump at Antang.

  • Farid Satria

    A recovering drug addict and now HIV+, Farid's mission is to do everything he can to end discrimination against HIV+ people in Indonesia. He does this though street soccer. In 2012 he represented Indonesia in Mexico at the Homeless World Cup and the national team came in 4th place. His story of resilience and respect brought the room to tears.

  • Zainal Siko

    Supporter of local markets and fighting against the loss of market space as the modern supermarket chains arrive. Zainal spoke on the economic ecosystem of the market and what their loss means for Makassar.
