Ava DuVernay

In 2012, Ava DuVernay's film Middle of Nowhere garnered the Best Director Award. She has been nominated for the Academy Award for the historical drama Selma (2014) and the criminal justice documentary 13th (2016). Other notable work includes her acclaimed television series which aired for seven seasons Queen Sugar (2015), the highest-grossing feature by Black woman director in American box office history A Wrinkle in Time (2018) and her limited series which garnered 16 Emmy nominations When They See Us (2019). Her latest film, Origin, made history as the first film by an African-American woman director to debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
