As creative director for British clothing brand Mother of Pearl, Amy Powney is cutting a path to sustainable, traceable fashion.
Why you should listen
Inspired by her nature-loving roots growing up in rural England, womenswear designer Amy Powney is a transformative voice in the fashion industry, championing traceable supply chains, respect for animals and low environmental impact. In 2006, she started her fashion career sweeping floors at British womenswear brand Mother of Pearl, working her way up to creative director and majority owner.
Awarded the 2017 British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund prize, Powney used her winnings to launch Mother of Pearl's first line of sustainable clothing. Her journey is documented in Fashion Reimagined, a 2022 independent film revealing the immense global difficulties around making sustainable clothing. In 2020, she collaborated with King Charles III (then Prince of Wales) and the Campaign for Wool, designing a limited-edition scarf to showcase the biodegradable, renewable material. Powney has shown her collections at London Fashion Week and Copenhagen Fashion Week.
