Kayoko Shiomi

Kayoko Shiomi is aTEDxKyoto curator and speaker coach. She is involved in selecting speakers and helping speakers prepare for their talks as well as proofreading bio translations. She is a professor of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in the Department of Business Administration at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan. She was a Fulbright scholar at Columbia University, Teachers College (1992-95). She has published books as well as university level textbooks, including "English Career Paths to Success", "Global Trends in Business", "Aim High for the TOEIC Test", "Career Design on DVD", "Target on Business and the TOEIC Test Vocabulary", and "Eigo de Hello Work". She enjoys developing materials based on TED Talks for tertiary EFL education. She became a TED translator in 2016 and she has transcribed, translated and reviewed some of the TEDxKyoto talks.

As a curator and speaker coach of TEDxKyoto, I have worked with several speakers, including a Zen priest, the mayor of Kyoto city, an Iranian actress in Japan who lost her family in the Iran-Iraq war, and a media activist who sends messages and food packages to Syrian refugees. As I assist them in preparing for the TEDxKyoto stage, I definitely feel the mutual benefits of our relationship, as I discover new perspectives and ways of thinking toward humanity and the importance of hope, compassion and actions that are needed to take to strengthen our community and influence change in the world. Katsuya Soda, whom I coached in 2015, is an advocate for refugees, focuses on educating Japanese society on the conditions and realities refugees face. His talk encouraged me to participate in the activities he initiated with UNCHR and Japanese private companies this summer. Together they collected more than 50,000 articles of clothing to give away to refugees via NPOs working in the region. Things I can do as an individual are small, but I’m very happy that I can contribute some to this wonderful TED community as a TEDxKyoto curator, speaker coach, and a translator and help inspiring speakers spread their ideas with the world.

-Proofreading TEDx speakers' scripts and giving advice on the improvement of their scripts. -Helping TEDx speakers deliver their talks, connecting with the participants. -Translating and reviewing translations of English to Japanese talks, articles, and documents. -Developing teaching materials using TED Talks and News Articles.
