Bio

Hi, I’m Amelia! With over 20 years of international experience as an interpreter and translator, I’m passionate about bridging communication gaps between cultures. I hold a Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) and a Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI), and I specialize in English-Spanish communication across various sectors, including legal, medical, and business settings. I’ve had the privilege of working with numerous organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, providing interpretation for international conferences, workshops, and community events. My goal is always to foster understanding and connection among diverse audiences. I’m particularly passionate about my work with refugees and asylum seekers. I’ve seen firsthand the challenges they face, especially in sensitive situations like mental health and legal proceedings. I believe that qualified interpreters are essential in these contexts, as AI simply can’t provide the human touch necessary for effective communication in emotionally charged situations. In addition to my interpreting work, I taught Spanish at Coventry University, focusing on communication and cultural immersion. I love helping students engage deeply with the language, as I believe this connection enriches their learning experience. I’m also eager to introduce innovative interpretation courses to empower future interpreters in their careers. Fluent in both English and Spanish, I’m excited to share my passion for language and culture with others. I truly believe that effective interpretation can make a significant difference in people’s lives and communities.

I'm passionate about

I am passionate about the transformative power of language and its ability to connect people across cultures. With over 20 years of experience as an interpreter and translator, I’ve witnessed firsthand how effective communication can break down barriers and foster understanding, particularly in diverse and challenging environments. One of my core passions lies in working with refugees and asylum seekers. I deeply believe that everyone deserves to be heard and understood, especially those navigating the complexities of a new country, legal systems, or mental health services. My work in this area has shown me how vital qualified interpreters are in providing the necessary support for these vulnerable populations. It’s not just about translating words; it’s about conveying emotions, cultural nuances, and personal stories that shape individual experiences. I advocate for the human touch in interpretation because AI cannot replace the empathy and connection that qualified interpreters bring to the table. I also find immense joy in teaching. My experience as a Spanish instructor at Coventry University allowed me to share my love for language with students while emphasizing the importance of cultural immersion. I am passionate about creating engaging and inclusive learning environments where students can connect deeply with the language they are studying. I believe that when learners understand the cultural context of a language, they become more effective communicators and are better equipped to navigate the complexities of real-world interactions. Furthermore, I am committed to empowering future interpreters through innovative training and education. I envision introducing new courses that focus on both the technical skills of interpretation and the soft skills necessary for effective communication. By nurturing a new generation of interpreters, I hope to contribute to the continued growth and professionalism of our field. In addition to my work and teaching, I am passionate about localization and the nuances of adapting content for different cultures. Understanding how language and culture intersect is crucial in our globalized world, and I enjoy helping organizations communicate effectively across linguistic barriers. Ultimately, my passion lies in the belief that language is more than just a tool; it is a means of connection, understanding, and empowerment. I am dedicated to fostering dialogue and promoting cultural awareness, knowing that each conversation can lead to greater empathy and collaboration.

The TED story

My TED story begins with a simple truth: language has the extraordinary power to connect us. Growing up bilingual, I experienced firsthand how words could bridge divides and foster understanding. This understanding motivated me to pursue a career where I could help others navigate the complexities of communication. Throughout my journey as an interpreter, I have had the privilege of working in various contexts, from facilitating conversations in international settings to supporting individuals facing critical challenges. A particularly impactful experience was interpreting for refugees at a community support workshop. In that moment, I witnessed the relief on their faces as they expressed their stories in their own words. It was a powerful reminder of why I chose this path: to amplify voices that might otherwise go unheard. I am equally passionate about teaching. In the classroom, I strive to create an immersive environment where students can explore language not just as a set of rules, but as a living, breathing means of connection. I believe that understanding the cultural context behind a language enriches our communication and fosters empathy. In my work, I advocate for the importance of skilled and compassionate interpreters. I firmly believe that effective interpretation is about more than just translating words; it’s about conveying emotions and cultural nuances that can shape understanding. As we become increasingly interconnected, the demand for interpreters who can provide that human touch is more vital than ever. Through my TED story, I hope to inspire others to recognize the power of language as a bridge to connection and understanding. Together, we can elevate the role of interpretation in fostering dialogue and collaboration in our diverse world.

People often don’t know that I excel at navigating complex and sensitive situations with empathy and understanding. While many see me primarily as an interpreter and translator, my ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds and facilitate communication in emotionally charged contexts is one of my greatest strengths. This skill has been especially vital in my work with refugees and asylum seekers, where I ensure that their stories and emotions are conveyed accurately and compassionately. Additionally, I have a knack for creating engaging and immersive learning experiences. As a former Spanish instructor at Coventry University, I developed unique approaches to teaching that emphasize cultural context alongside language skills. This creative flair allows me to inspire students to connect deeply with what they are learning, fostering an environment where they feel empowered to communicate effectively. I also have a strong background in localization, enabling me to adapt content in ways that resonate with specific audiences. This involves not only translating text but also understanding cultural nuances and expectations. My keen eye for detail and cultural awareness ensures that the message remains authentic and impactful, regardless of the language. Moreover, I have a talent for public speaking and sharing my insights on the importance of interpretation and cultural understanding. While I am often behind the scenes facilitating communication, I enjoy stepping into the spotlight to advocate for the value of qualified interpreters and the vital role they play in bridging cultural gaps. This ability enhances my work as an interpreter and educator, as it creates a safe space for open dialogue and genuine connection. People often underestimate how crucial these interpersonal skills are in effective communication.
