The TED story

My passion for linguistics began during the Russo-Ukrainian war when I witnessed the urgent need for refugees to feel welcomed in America. I realized that one critical step in their integration was becoming comfortable with English. Moved by this, I became a conversational partner, helping refugees improve their language skills and build confidence in their new environment. As I sought opportunities to fulfill the cross-cultural volunteer requirements for the International Skills Diploma Seal, I discovered subtitling. This experience amazed me, as it allowed me to bring my passion for accessibility into a new realm. By ensuring that important ideas were accessible to non-native speakers, I realized how subtitling could bridge cultural gaps and make knowledge available to a global audience. This journey—from aiding refugees to enhancing cross-cultural understanding through subtitles—has deepened my commitment to creating a world where language is no barrier to connection and learning.
