Bio

Originally from Italy, I have been living in Dublin, Ireland, since 2004. I worked and studied in University College, Dublin (UCD), where I was awarded a B.A. in Celtic Studies (2007), an M.Litt. in Irish Folklore on the Feast of Saint John/Midsummer (2009), and a Ph.D. in Early Irish and Irish Folklore on the functions and patterns of place-name stories in specific tales and legends (2015). I am currently working as a Teacher in Italian, Celtic Mythology and Irish Folklore at Crumlin College of Further Education. My job consists of: -Giving presentations, both online and in person; - Facilitating discussion and understanding of topics, more specifically about pagan Celtic religion, combining Classical writings, archaeology, history and medieval insular literatures of Britain and Ireland, and related to Calendar Custom; - Encouraging learners to develop and nurture critical thinking, and other transferable skills; - Carrying out administrative work. I am also passionate about volunteering and community projects. This is my experience in the area: 5th-7th September 2014 Voluntary work at the 20th Cape Clear Island International Storytelling Festival. Duties included: - Setting up and clearing venues for events; - Selling tickets for workshops, concerts and storytelling sessions; - Giving practical tips and information to festival attendees. July 2012 Voluntary work at the Irish Conference of Medievalists, including: - Manning the registration desk; - Meeting and greeting delegates; - Selling academic books (work entailed price conversion from pound sterling to euro); - Ensuring the smooth progression of the conference. March 2008- March 2009 Voluntary work in charity shop, Saint Vincent’s De Paul, Rathmines, including: - Use of the till, cash register, and cash handling; - Bringing back to life used books, clothes, and bric-a-brac; - Sorting through second-hand stock, distinguishing between sellable and unsellable items; - Merchandising; - Customer service in a busy working environment. 2nd July 2008 Work in the World Archaeological Congress, customer service at the Irish Folklore stall, UCD. September 2008 University lectures in Folk Religion (Irish Folklore), UCD. Finally, I like writing, especially poems, but also short stories and travelogues. Some of my poems have featured in anthologies ('Landing Places' and 'Embers of Words'), and literary journals ('Boyne Berries').

The TED story

I came across TED talks by chance: friends and mentors mentioned TED talks from time to time. It was only after attending a TEDX event in Dublin, a couple of years ago, that I became truly inspired by them. I like the variety of the talks. Some of them are surprising, others are inspiring, yet other almost incredible. As somebody involved in third-level education, and who tries to nurture critical thinking in others, I love TED talks. I also like the fact that they often challenge the status quo, and address root causes of problems, rather than just symptoms. So I joined the TED team as a translator, because I am fluent in two languages, and I am willing to spread the message inherent in talks. Good ideas know no boundaries, as language barriers can be overcome.
