The TED story

I grew up in the GDR. When I was 7 years old, my dad took me to East Berlin in August 1989. His plan was to escape. He knew that the Allied servicemen could cross the borders without being searched by the borderpatrol. One of them was brave enough to open the boot of his car and give us a ride. We crossed the border unharmed. The worst thing for my dad was what could have happened. For me, what he did is stupid and brave at the same time. To take a little girl of 7 on a trip like this is risky, but if the circumstances you live in are not what you expect life to be, you should change something. The GDR locked up its people so they would obey. What the serviceman did, to me, is the most courageous act I can think of. To risk his life for two foreigners without even getting money or any other kind of return service. If more people would act so selflessly, the world would be a much better place. We are officially the last two people to have escaped the GDR at the inner German border.
