Born in Macao, China, before the handover I was always interested in the ability of adaptation in shared communities with little space to go around, and no room for traditional puns or inflexibility. Since coming to Portugal I've been adapting to a wider country with short-sighted visions of immigrants and suffering with an enormous blow to its economy, its pride and specially its hopes for a stable and calm future (as dictated by local tradition). Often, I've seen people struggle to keep hold of their jobs, their ethics and their families from drifting apart. In my job as a teacher (mostly children and teenagers) and a translator (mostly immigrants), I have dealt with wide-spread fears of the future, overall instability and struggled to help people tread their own path -- that can hold their dreams as plausible and their survival sustainable.
