About Angela

Bio

My name is Ángela Agraz and I am a Spanish translator and interpreter. I am currently living in the Netherlands working as a Virtual Trainer for the company ISUS (ispeakuspeak) and as a translator too. In the past I lived in Ireland, United Kingdom and France and I worked there as an aupair and private teacher. I obtained a BA degree on Translation and Interpreting in Valencia. During my studies, I carried out many different translations. However, the project that made me vibrate the most was my Final Project Degree. By calling to a number that I found on the Internet, I suddenly realized that I was talking to Antonia San Juan, one of the best Spanish actresses ever and which is more, my favourite actress. She gave me the chance to translate one of her master pieces into English and French. I, therefore, managed to embed the French subtitles on her shortmovie and also developed the whole English dubbing process together with my best friend in University. The result was not bad, but the most important is that I finally learned to interpret my dream: become a professional subtitler. Since I am specializing in Audiovisual Translation I will apply for the METAV (Máster Europeo en Traducción Audiovisual) in Barcelona the coming year. I am eager to learn and looking forward to having the chance to work for Ted Talks as a subtitler.

I'm passionate about

Audiovisual translation, people, languages, movies, music, learning, kids, day-to-day achievements, happiness, co-operation, team-work, words, translation, interpreting, the world, culture, feelings.

An idea worth spreading

I think that the best idea I ever had was to start a summer school in my village for children to learn the importance of the English language while having fun. Summer Campus is divided into countries: UK, EEUU and Australia. Naturally I chose these because English is the official language in the three of them. Nonetheless, that is not the most important detail about this project but the fact that they feel like they are travelling without leaving the 4000m2 area that one of the mothers gently offered me after our first Summer Campus release in 2012. In Australia they play sports, in EEUU they do artcrafts and in UK they play word games. The system consists in dividing the kids into groups and make them rotate. The rest of the time they swim, eat and play freely so that they feel comfortable and relaxed. Our role is to show them as many English expressions as possible while playing with them and being their friends. Pictures are worth watching! https://www.facebook.com/SummerCampusBlo

The TED story

I have been working with TED Talk videos for a long time with my students. In my opinion it is an outstanding project that enables people to improve themselves as human beings, communicators and professionals by just watching, paying attention and being open to changes. I truly believe that it is possible to do something about the current situation where all we do is complain, work and vice versa and this is one of the sources I use to try to do so. Those are the main reasons why I would be more than happy to become a TED Talk subtitler; it would allow me to improve as a professional but also to help others to understand stories that are happening all around the world and that will definitely make a difference in their lives.

Things you might not know

At fighting for what I dream and at dodging what I find negative or uninteresting. Some tend to think that everybody is as conformist as we human beings are supposed to be. It's just too predictable.
