Tyler (Shiqiao) Yan University of California, Berkeley *Education August 2012-present: College of Natural Resources, University of California-Berkeley-Honor from fall 2012 to spring 2013 September 2009-June 2012: Hangzhou Foreign Language School, Hangzhou, China *Internship and On Campus Involvement Director of Berkeley China Forum, April 2013-November 2013. Officially sponsored by General-Consulate of China, San Francisco and supported by Berkeley and Institute for Chinese Studies, BCF aims to create a platform for students, scholars, professionals and entrepreneurs to discuss on-going events, opportunities, challenges in China. Collaborated with BCF Executive Board to plan the forum, develop strategies and search for speaker. Recruited interns. Also responsible for the website development. International Student Mentor at Berkeley International Office, May 2013-December 2013. Organized group activities for a group of 10 international students and provided individual advising. Received training from the Berkeley International Office. Undergraduate Student Instructor at ONPS summer school, June 2013-August 2013. Established in 2011, the ONPS International Summer School program has been the most widely recognized summer school in Greater China. Assisted the Yale professor Miguel Trelles with two classes on History of Art. Taught weekly seminars for each of the class. Received the Outstanding Instructor Award. Director of the Extracurricular Education at High school, September 2010-May 2012. This is a democratic education program initiated by students at Hangzhou Foreign Language School. Planned and implemented the program, recruited teachers (senior students), promoted and coordinated lectures and supervised the program. Launched 12 courses, each accommodating up to 30 students. Census Investigator at Municipal Bureau of Statistics, summer 2010. Worked for the 6th China Census project. Collected through interview, and analyzed demographic data of 70. *Research Lab assistant, Urban Pest Management Center at UC Berkeley, September 2012-May 2013. Collected data and experimented on bedbugs and termites for the pest control research, with emphasis on their activities in relation to CO2 concentration. Other responsibilities include the maintenance/preparation of test sites and the operation of HOBO devices. Research Project on the impact of resin extraction and production on local ecology and Pine trees, July 2011. Made a field trip to Guangxi province (the major resin exporting region in China), collected statistics and observations in local pine woods and interviewed resin peasants. Composed suggestions to Songbao Resin Product Company to reduce the damage to the pine trees and improve the business sustainability. Captain of environmental research team, October 2010. Lead field research on the stratified distribution of vegetation in Tianmu Mountain (located in Hangzhou, Southeastern China). Initiated, lead and coordinated a team of 3 high school students. 3 weeks of literature research and one weekend in the mountain. Produced and gave a presentation, which was exchanged with another student’s presentation in the U.S. Interviewed the regional production manager and the marketing manager of Lear Cooperation at Anhui (Automobile Accessories Producer, founded in Detroit), June 2009. Interviewed about promotion strategies, quality control and industrial efficiency. Worked with a partner. The report was published in the school’s business journal. *Theater work Directed, and acted, in the CAL production of The Importance of Being Earnest, 2012. By convention, each class will produce a drama at the year of graduation. Responsible for the marketing, supervising rehearsals and reaching out for school administration and the sponsor. Directed an original drama, So Much in Love, in high school’s annual art festival, 2011. Recruited 30 actors and stuff, worked on scripts and directed the play. The show won the second prize. *Awards -College Honor Fall 2012-Spring 2013: awarded to students with qualified GPA in the College of Natural Resources. -Outstanding Instructor at ONPS summer school August 2013: based on the evaluation by the program manager and the professors. -Highest honor student 2009-2012: awarded to students for excellent academic performance and discipline. -Outstanding student representative 2011: awarded for diligence and contribution to the student council.
