Join us for an inspiring afternoon of original ideas, bold perspectives, and thought‑provoking storytelling as our student speakers take to the TEDx stage. This year’s event brings together a diverse range of talks that challenge assumptions, question norms, and invite us to see the world—and ourselves—differently. Our speakers will explore confidence in a surprising new light, asking “What if confidence isn’t something we need more of, but something we’re quietly paying for?” They will take us on a journey through The Colour of Care, examining how compassion is expressed and experienced across communities. We will be invited to rethink our limits through Growth Mindset: Redefining Impossible, before considering urgent ethical and scientific questions in Can New Approach Methodologies Really Replace Animal Testing? From the Importance of Individuality to Why We Don’t Recognize Climate Change (From an Anxious Teen), our speakers offer fresh insights into personal identity and global responsibility. The programme continues with When Learning Starts To Matter Again, a powerful reflection on reconnecting with purpose in education, followed by Alliance with Anxiety, a talk that reframes our relationship with worry in a world that demands resilience. We will also hear a vital and timely exploration of Medical Misogyny, highlighting gaps and biases in healthcare experiences. Finally, our event closes with Redefining Strength in Sport, a re‑examination of what it truly means to be strong—on and off the field. Together, these talks promise an afternoon of curiosity, courage, and conversation. We can’t wait to share these extraordinary ideas with you.

    Student

    David is a Year 13 student and has been at the Collegiate since Year 7. David studies Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. His keen interests include medicine, public health, and understanding how healthcare systems can better serve diverse populations. He will be speaking about racial bias in healthcare and how both clinical and systemic disparities can affect patient outcomes in the UK. Talk Title: The Colour of Care

  • Ethan Perkins

    Lecturer of Cancer Biology and Therapeutics Institute of Cancer Therapeutics University of Bradford

    Dr Perkins is an alumnus, having completed his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences and Masters in Drug Toxicology and Safety Pharmacology. Following his Masters, Ethan undertook a PhD in the fields of Biomaterials and Targeted Toxicology. Upon completion of his PhD, Ethan worked as a senior scientist in genetic toxicology before completing an industry-led postdoc in immunology & immunotoxicology. Ethan returned to the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics, University of Bradford as a Lecturer in Cancer Biology and Therapeutics in September 2023, focusing his research into the development of Advanced In Vitro Models of the tumour microenvironment to enhance drug development processes and provide a physiologically relevant screening platform for targeted anti-cancer therapies.     James Luxford Teacher of Science and Technology Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate

    James Luxford is a Teacher of Science and Technology and the Esports Coordinator at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate. His work focuses on student engagement, leadership development, and the role of play in education. Through school-based esports programmes, James has supported students from primary through sixth form in developing teamwork, accountability, and transferable skills that extend far beyond the game.     Jolly is a Year 12 student, originally from Hong Kong, and currently studying Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Having an international background, as well as a passion for chemistry, Jolly wanted to blend these experiences with a relevant, but relatively unrecognized topic, which is climate change – in this talk, Jolly will be presenting thoughts on climate change, focusing on promoting proactiveness and a more optimistic outlook to listeners.     Rachel is a Year 13 student who currently studies Biology, Chemistry and Maths A-level which has offered her a scientific foundation in healthcare. Faced with stories of discrimination of the women around with her own personal experiences, this had grounded her interest in the social side of medicine: prejudice. Today, Rachel will be talking about the consequences of overlooking misogyny in healthcare. Talk Title: Medical Misogyny

    Reanna is a Year 13 student. She studies Chemistry, Biology, Maths, and Art. Her keen interests include the scientific mannerisms of the human body and the impact of mental health.     Rhea is a year 12 student and has been at the Collegiate since year 9. She is originally from England. Rhea studies economics, psychology and maths. Her keen interests include the human mind and what it’s truly capable of. She will be speaking about how thoughts have the potential to shape outcomes.     Confidence strategist and founder of HAUS OF SC

    Shanice Childerley is a confidence strategist and founder of HAUS OF SC, where she works at the intersection of mindset, self-belief, and behavioural change. With a background in high-pressure leadership environments, Shanice brings a deeply human perspective to how our internal narratives shape the way we show up, lead, and belong. Talk Title: What if confidence isn’t something we need more of - but something we’re quietly paying for?

    Student

    Toby is a Year 13 student. He has been a student at Queen Ethelburga’s since Year 7, and is the Head Boy for the academic year 2025–2026. He studies A Level Physical Education, A Level Business, and BTEC Applied Science. Alongside his studies, Toby is a committed sportsman with a particular passion for rugby, where he has experienced first-hand the physical and mental demands of competitive sport. As Head Boy, he is an advocate for positive school culture, leadership through empathy, and open conversations around wellbeing. His experiences in sport and leadership have shaped his interest in how environments influence behaviour, resilience, and attitudes towards health. Talk Title: Redefining Strength in Sport
