TEDxYouth@HJIS is a student-led event that provides students in the HJIS community with the platform to voice their opinions freely. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Title: The importance of your voice Description: Everyone has a voice, but not everyone knows how or when to use it. While we tend to think that using our voice means creating great change, it can be as small as just joining a game of football. Therefore, it doesn’t matter how small the situation is or how insignificant you think it is; your voice matters. Remember, as Emma Watson says, “If not me, who? If not now, when?”

Title: How to balance social life and school Description: My Ted talk was all about how we can balance both school work and our social lives. I gave stories on my challenges from this topic, and explained ways to help. I gave 4 tips: Understand you need balance, time management, a schedule, and goals, and with these tips, I researched carefully how these helped, and during the speech, I elaborated on them. The whole takeaway of my speech was to teach or inform the audience on how there are ways to balance work/school, and your social life.

Title: Habits: the difficulty of making good habits Description: My TED talk was about how to build a good habit and start working on something good and challenging, and continue doing it for a long time. It teaches people the importance of perseverance and that patience is crucial in helping with growth and change. It also emphasizes the importance of focusing on the benefits, such as growth, rather than the challenges or pain. It teaches my audience to take small steps: each small step is a key step to success, no matter how small.

Title: Language is a Tool for Tomorrow Description: “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world,” by Ludwig Wittgenstein, perfectly encapsulates just how useful a tool language is. It shapes our tones, voices, personalities, connections, and so much more. I explore these concepts while connecting them to my own culture and what it’s like to be a foreigner in a country in which even the 3 languages I speak can not help me.

Title: The value of where you direct your attention Description: Your attention is always on something whether you realize it or not. It’s not just a passive process but a choice. Choosing where you direct your attention in aspects of your life significantly impacts your mental health. This talk highlights how where we direct our attention shapes our mindset and our experiences. Focusing your attention on the negativity leads to despair, however if we choose to direct our attention onto even the smallest of positives in life, it helps us create gratitude and fosters resilience, ultimately helping us have a more positive outlook on life.

Title: Adapting Beyond the Borders Description: In a rapidly changing world, adaptability is one of our greatest strengths. Drawing from my experience of moving to Japan, I’ll explore how cultural assimilation helped me to not only adjust to change but thrive in it, finding growth, connection, and resilience without losing my true self.

Title: Is having everything you want actually beneficial for you? Description: This Ted Talk is about how having everything you want may not be as beneficial to you as you may think. Gratitude is an essential part of our lives, and without it, we would not be able to work with other people. This Ted Talk also mentions how, instead of looking for the things that we don't have or don't own, we should just be grateful for the things we do have. Even when we see ourselves as “unlucky” because we don't have certain things. Others might not even be able to access things you easily own due to limited opportunities.

  • Oura Inouchi

    Guest Speaker

Title: The Power of Breaks Description: We’re often told that success comes from working harder and longer, but what if that’s actually holding us back? In my talk, I share why taking intentional breaks isn’t wasted time, but how it is essential for balance and success in a demanding world. From the scientific background on how our brains works, to personal stories of late-night struggles, I explore how stepping away can help us come back stronger. Sometimes the best way to move forward is to pause.

  • Vedant Singh

Title: The Potential of Blockchain Description: I talked about how blockchain works through a series of short stories. Those stories showcased the potential that the blockchain holds, with all its upsides. I wanted to educate people on what blockchain technology can achieve and told them that blockchain isn't just Bitcoin; it's a lot more than just that.
