Pandemics may feel like rare catastrophes, yet outbreaks killing thousands occur with surprising regularity—sometimes with as little as four years between them. Scientists estimate the odds of living through a COVID-19-level pandemic in a lifetime could be as high as 78 percent. While these risks remain high, advances like early warning systems and vaccines have already saved millions. Collective action and new technologies can reduce both the likelihood and impact of future pandemics.
