As the nation becomes more multicultural, some places are quietly becoming whiter and less diverse. Through a two-year, 27,000-mile immersion in rapidly growing white communities, vivid details emerged—like counting more Confederate flags than Black people in North Idaho, or mingling at gated enclaves and megachurches. Many residents seek safety, comfort, and familiarity, often without conscious racial intent, yet the result is stark separation. Despite better personal relationships across races, residential and educational segregation remains as stubborn as it was in 1970.
