A city of seven million people rises for just 55 days at the Kumbh Mela festival in India, built from five simple materials and disassembled within a week. This temporary megacity offers all the infrastructure and services of a permanent metropolis but leaves almost no trace when gone. Its intentional impermanence challenges the obsession with lasting structures and urges a shift toward flexible, reversible urban solutions. Such fleeting settlements highlight how cities can touch the Earth lightly while efficiently meeting massive human needs.
