The world’s age of exploration is far from over—most of it now happens at the microscopic level. Although viruses were discovered just over a century ago, they make up more genetic material on Earth than all other life forms combined. Today’s genetic sequencing reveals that up to 50 percent of the DNA in our bodies belongs to unknown life, called biological dark matter. These uncharted genetic territories could contain entirely new forms of life and the keys to solving major scientific mysteries.
