A new approach uses floating offshore pods filled with microalgae to turn city wastewater into fuel, without competing with agriculture for land or water. Microalgae can produce up to 5,000 gallons of oil per acre per year, far outpacing traditional biofuel crops. These flexible, solar-powered modules not only generate biofuels but also clean water, trap carbon dioxide, and foster marine habitats. Integrating biofuel production with aquaculture and renewable energy could create sustainable, multi-purpose systems for coastal cities.
