Everything in the world, from a coffee cup to the human body, is built from a handful of fundamental particles. The Standard Model reveals that atoms contain electrons and dense nuclei, and those nuclei are made of protons and neutrons, which in turn are made of quarks. Forces like electromagnetism and the strong force bind these particles together, while particles called photons and gluons act as carriers of those forces. Despite solving many mysteries, the Standard Model leaves questions about gravity and dark matter unanswered.
