Scientists use the Drake equation to estimate how many technological civilizations might exist in our galaxy. Its variables range from the rate of star formation to the odds that intelligent life develops and uses technology. As new planets are discovered, some factors become clearer, but the greatest uncertainty remains how long civilizations survive and transmit. If life is found beyond Earth, even once, it would suggest life is common across the cosmos.
