Many students never imagine a future in science because they lack exposure to real-world scientific experiences. A virtual reality program now lets middle schoolers explore underwater ecosystems and step into the shoes of marine biologists, no matter where they live. In pilot tests across 26 states, students reported feeling engaged and able to picture themselves as scientists. Affordable setups and collaborative play help ensure access for underrepresented groups.
