Capturing carbon dioxide directly from the air is a massive technical challenge, given its low concentration—just 400 parts per million, like finding one green shirt in a crowd of 1,800. Yet new engineered solutions, or 'synthetic forests,' can pull CO2 from the air far more densely than real trees, with some companies already lowering costs. These technologies demand huge energy inputs and smart design but could capture as much CO2 as the Amazon while using 500 times less land. To truly make an impact, society must invest heavily, regulate carbon, and see negative emissions as one tool among many.
