From Guatemala’s general strike that ousted a president to parents in Mosul keeping children home from ISIS-controlled schools, strategic nonviolent action can shift the balance of power. These approaches go beyond protests, using strikes, alternative media, and other creative tactics to target the institutions that uphold oppressive systems. With thoughtful planning and innovation, nonviolent struggle has the potential to make violence obsolete.
