「メタンの削減は、短期的には、気候変動のリスクを低減させる上で、すぐさま実行可能で最も効果の期待できる手段です」と大気科学者のイリッサ・オコは語ります。というのも、長期間にわたって蓄積するCO2とは違い、メタンによる温暖化は、ほぼ全てが最近の排出によるものだからです。オコはメタン汚染の主な排出源が３つあり、それらに対応すれば、数十年ではなく数年以内に地球温暖化の速度を大幅に下げられると指摘し、「今こそメタン対策を行う時」と呼びかけます。
