체르노빌은 세계 최악의 원자력 재앙의 현장이었다. 지난 27년 동안 발전소 주변 지역은 "접근 금지 구역"으로 불렸다. 그럼에도 불구하고 주로 여성 노인들로 이루어진 약 200명의 공동체가 그곳에서 산다. 이 자부심 많은 할머니들, 고향, 공동체 사이에는 "방사능과도 맞먹는 힘"이 있기 때문에 이들은 이주하라는 명령을 거부했다.
