Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has transformed from a brutal treatment once causing broken bones to a safe, powerful tool for severe depression. In one striking case, a nurse unable to work or concentrate regained her life after ECT and went on to excel in graduate school. Although half or more of patients see major improvement, outdated images still cloud public perception. Advances in medicine have made ECT much safer, and growing understanding may unlock even greater potential.
