Bio
Julio de Tavares has a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin (1998), a Masters in Sociology from Universidade de Brasília (1984), and a Bachelors in History from Universidade Federal Fluminense, UFF (1980).
He was a Rockefeller Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center for Black Music Research, Chicago (2001), a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Communications Department at Florida Atlantic University, at Boca Raton (2004), a Carnegie Equity Scholar at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa (2010), and a Visiting Professor at Universidade Andina Simón Bolivar, Quito, Equator (2010).
A former member of the Executive Board of the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (2000/2009), Professor Tavares is currently the Coordinator of the Cognitive Anthropology Graduate Project (UFF/FRM), as well as an Associate Professor in the Anthropology Department at UFF, in Brazil, where he is also a member of the Board of the Graduate Program in Anthropology.
