About Jane
Bio
I have always regarded my principal occupation, since having children, as raising our three sons to responsible adulthood. However, as a newly minted empty nester, I suppose it might make sense to define myself in turns of my chief profit-making endeavor, as owner manager of a winery in Napa Valley, producing high quality Bordeaux varietals (principally cabernet sauvignon).
As a person who believes reproductive rights are "human rights", I have been an active member, and a tireless and effective fundraiser of NARAL Pro Choice America for decades. During these years, I assisted in growing the local California chapter to being one of the largest in the nation. I now sit on the NARAL National Board of Directors and work closely with our legislative representatives in defense of women's legal reproductive rights.
I have chaired school boards and worked with various organizations dedicated to improving the quality of both public and private education in San Francisco. My concern for the welfare of children is also reflected in my involvement with The San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center where I have served on the board for the last eight years.
Somewhat reluctantly, I recently abandoned my resident alien status (as a Canadian born citizen) and became a US Citizen (at the age of 50) in order to be a more active and credible voice for the educational causes and philanthropic organizations I support.
I'm passionate about
I have taken an active part in supporting philanthropies which have the potential to make major contributions to health and welfare in the developing world.
An idea worth spreading
Men in modern western societies have a strong vested interest in female reproductive rights. Until the advent of DNA testing, the potential consequences of premarital sex were largely a problem for women, not men. Since paternity was a matter of opinion and conjecture, an unwanted pregnancy was a burden not equally shared. Now that science has taken the guesswork out of determining fatherhood, an unwanted pregnancy will result for men in both the financial and emotional burdens that arise from having an unintended child. The prevailing liberal sexual mores of western societies depend upon the availability and access to contraception and abortion. In the absence of such female reproductive rights, men and women would today be almost equally impacted and both would need to adopt sexual mores of a bygone era
