I joined Sightsavers as CEO in 2005, and over that time Sightsavers has become a recognised development organisation in the fields of eye health, neglected tropical diseases and disability. Income and impact have dramatically increased over the last decade, and the organisation has developed a reputation for efficient delivery, exemplary monitoring and evaluation capability and effective advocacy. Without forgetting the life changing impact on individuals and families of restoring sight or empowering people with disabilities. I graduated in Physics from Bristol University in 1981, and went on to Churchill College, Cambridge to do a PhD in Energy Studies. I worked in the gas industry until 2002, working for British Gas and then Hess Corporation. As Managing Director I built Hess UK's gas and electricity trading and marketing business from scratch, until it was sold in 2002 for £120 million. From 2002 I ran my own interim management business, specialising in turnaround and sale of energy businesses. I was also on the board of Notting Hill Housing Association in London. I was awarded a CBE for services to visually impaired people abroad in 2016.

Sightsavers. Particularly the people who work there and the amazing work they do. When I visit our programmes it reminds me of why I get up in the morning.

Leadership isn't just about the attributes you read in business books. Its about connecting emotionally with people and making them feel they can move mountains.

Sightsavers was a finalist for the first 'Audacious' prize, with our ambitious programme to eliminate trachoma (which is now mainly found in Africa). We were successful in attracting a number of investors, and as a result I was invited to give a TED talk on the programme in 2018. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my career.
