Bio

Dr. Lisa Whittington is an artist and educator with a passion for community and a fire for art. Her artwork has exhibited in various museums and galleries around the country. Dr. Whittington was sought out by NBC News to shed light on a protest that was taking place at the Whitney Museum in NY in 2016 over a painting of Emmett Till. (https://www.nbcnews.com/think/news/museumssowhite-representation-black-pain-why-emmett-till-painting-matters-ncna737931) She was also hosted by East Tennessee University, the Reece Museum, and the Dyer family in Tennessee (An Evening at the Reece Museum with and Emmett Till Painting) to discuss, racism and social justice in the arts and her process for painting Emmett Till and his mother. Dr. Whittington has also served as an adjunct professor for over ten years teaching courses in the Humanities Arts, Media Literacy, and Art Education at the University of West Georgia, NCCU, and Saint Leo University. She obtained her doctorate in Art Education from the University of Georgia with a research focus on preparing teachers to work in urban schools. She has a deep passion a belief in the positive benefits of art education and uses her own troubled upbringing as an example of what a quality art education can do for at risk youth. Her artwork leans toward expressive and abstract. Lisa Whittington focuses on documenting female subjects, recording her childhood, and documenting African American history in her work. Her work is very symbolic and has a language of its own. Lisa Whittington was born and raised in New York City and had a front row seat to the the birth of Hip Hop and the Pop Art Movement happening in NYC. Her observations of growing up in New York has had a major influence on her work. When she was training to become an art teacher, Dr. Larry Walker, father of Kara Walker was one of her teachers and mentors at Georgia State University where Lisa worked on her certification. He taught her to be strong and to speak up. Dr. Whittington was a speaker for TEDxDeerPark in 2016 where she presented "What Does Art Want With You.?" She is launching a blog in 2018 based off of her talk at Deer Park. Lisa Whittington currently serves as an art teacher at Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta.
