Paul Snelgrove

Dr. Paul Snelgrove is a Professor in the Ocean Sciences Centre and Biology Department at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He received a BSc Honours from Memorial University, an MSc in Oceanography from McGill University, and a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Boreal and Cold Ocean Systems, and has explored the seafloor with scuba, ships, submersibles and remotely operated vehicles to study the role of transport of larval fish and invertebrates in setting recruitment and biodiversity patterns in marine seafloor organisms. He is Director of the NSERC Canadian Healthy Oceans Network, a national research network that is developing new tools for sustainable oceans. He recently led the synthesis of the International Census of Marine Life research program and authored “Discoveries of the Census of Marine Life: Making Ocean Life Count.”

Exploring the deep blue sea

The oceans should matter as much to a yak herder in Tibet as to a fisherman in coastal Newfoundland. The fate of every human, no matter we live, is tied to the oceans and the many things they do for this planet. Planet Earth is really Planet Ocean, even for species like us that live on land. As the oceans go, so will we.
