Bio

T.J. Altieri has lived a life committed to education and the betterment of society. He has taken his many job and academic experiences and integrated them into a thriving career of teaching and community engagement. The diversity of his past endeavors has enhanced T.J.'s ability to reach people of all ages and from all walks of life. This coupled with his passion for teaching has lead to a fulfilling career in education. Whether it is at such reputable institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art or in the public school setting, T.J.'s drive and versatility has afforded him much success. In addition to being a history instructor for 4 years, T.J. is currently the Conservation Discovery Corps. Coordinator at Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo, where he combines teaching with real-world field work and engaging education initiatives. This program has won the Association of Zoo's and Aquariums' 2014 Education Top Honors Award for its outstanding work. In June of 2014, he was chosen as Hofstra University's Alumnus of the Month due to his interesting and diverse work experience. He has also won Hofstra's Asian Studies Essay Award for his compelling writing on Japanese literature. Outside of work, T.J. Altieri has dedicated his time to exploring the world in many different ways and even cajoled his love for expedition paddling into being the first Long Island Chair for the charity event Kayak for a Cause, where he was able toraise over $14 thousand dollars. T.J.'s independent scholarly focus for the past 17 years has been ancient Celtic and classical European archaeology focusing on gender studies, but also has experience (classroom, lab and field) in neolithic European, pre-historic North American, and historic American archaeology. His cultural resource management work with firms like The Louis Berger Group has taken him on excavations all over the East Coast, and these all enhance his ability to be an effective and memorable educator.

There are many, but I'd say one that intrigues me is how public archaeology can expose things about our modern culture and can affect race relations.
