Bio
Suzanne is a designer turned biofabrication pioneer for consumer products. She started growing microbial materials in 2003 coining the term ‘Biocouture’. She advises material startups and global consumer brands on the amazing new world of grown materials.
A graduate of the celebrated design school Central Saint Martins in London, her work has been featured widely in the media and exhibited globally. Suzanne's ground-breaking book ‘Fashioning the Future: tomorrow’s wardrobe’, was the first to articulate the future of fashion through science and technology.
She is a TED Senior Fellow, and a Launch Material Innovator - an initiative of NASA, Nike, USAID and the US State Department.
For the last 5 years Suzanne has been the Chief Creative Officer of Modern Meadow, a biofabrication startup in New York. In 2014 Suzanne founded ‘BIOFABRICATE’, an international summit fostering design, biology and technology. Today BIOFABRICATE offers three pillars: Design, Consult, Learn.
I'm passionate about
Replacing plastics with materials that do better for us and the planet, other innovators solving environmental problems (you rock), craftsmanship, Mexico, Jack Russell terriers (looking for a puppy!)
An idea worth spreading
There's a material revolution happening and it's biofabricated! Computers can now read and write DNA. We are beginning to design and fabricate with living cells: bacteria, yeast, algae, fungi, mammalian cells – these are the factories of the future. The new start-ups are growing natures materials for consumer goods like food, fabrics, footwear, packaging and bricks. These solutions seek to harness waste streams or renewable resources reducing land, water, energy and chemistry to manufacture materials. The C21st convergence of design and biology will change what we eat, what we wear, what we drive, even how we build our cities.
