Jun Wang

Jun Wang, PhD, is the founder and CEO of iCarbonX and a board member of BGI (formerly Beijing Genomics Institute). Wang co-founded BGI in 1999 and, as CEO, raised more than $1 billion to grow the company into one of the world’s premier research facilities committed to excellence in genome sciences. Wang founded iCarbonX in 2015 to build an Internet-based ecosystem of digital life based on artificial intelligence and a combination of an individual’s biological, behavioral and psychological data. With a rapidly growing global foundation and in cooperation with the world’s leading partners, iCarbonX is devoted to interpreting, studying, guiding and managing the digital life, and providing personalized products and services that help people lead a healthier new life. Wang’s research focuses on genomics and related bioinformatics analysis of complex diseases and agricultural crops, with the goal of developing applications using genomic information. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed original papers and his work has been the subject of more than 25 cover stories in the world’s top science journals, including Cell, Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine and Science. Jun Wang is credited with sequencing the genome of the first Asian person, the giant panda and the human gut microbiome. He is also a significant contributor to the Human Genome Project and the rice-genome-sequencing initiative. An Ole Rømer Professor at the University of Copenhagen, Wang holds a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence and a PhD in bioinformatics from Peking University.
