About Courtney

I am a…

Activist, Entrepreneur, Journalist, Writer/Editor

Bio

I’m the author of Learning in Public: Lessons for a Racially-Divided America From my Daughter's School, among other books. I also have a popular Substack newsletter, called Examined Family, and co-founded the Solutions Journalism Network, FRESH Speakers, and the Bay Area chapter of Integrated Schools. I'm the Storyteller-in-Residence at The Holding Co, a lab to redesign care for the 21st century. My literal happy place is our co-housing community in Oakland, Calif. My metaphorical happy place is asking people questions.

I'm passionate about

the simplicity on the other side of complexity (h/t Oliver Wendell Holmes).

An idea worth spreading

“Unless our children begin to learn together, there is little hope that our people will ever begin to live together.” -Justice Thurgood Marshall

Areas of expertise

Activism, diversity, education, feminism, Generation Y, integration, journalism, racial justice, solutions journalism, The American Dream

The TED story

I spoke at the first ever TEDWomen and my dad (my +1) might have started the standing ovation.

Things you might not know

cutting my husband's hair. (A COVID-era learning.)
