About Christy

I am a…

Activist, Connector, Educator/Teacher, Environmentalist, Idea generator, Life mentor, Writer/Editor

Bio

I am a caring-centered, social activist adjunct English professor at two community colleges in San Diego and a Teacher Consultant/Fellow/Leader in the San Diego Area Writing Project. I believe the purpose of life is to live life with purpose. My curriculum reflects this philosophy as I aim to activate and support student agency to make real change in their lives and communities.

I'm passionate about

I am passionate about social, racial, economic, and environmental justice, and supporting others, including my students, colleagues, friends, husband, and family, in the discovery and development of their strengths and talents. I am passionate about helping my students see themselves as writers and agents of change. We have many problems to solve and we each have a part to play in this lifetime to repair and heal what is broken and cultivate new growth.

An idea worth spreading

Spend time in nature. When we are children, we are close to nature. In nature, the principle of abundance reigns supreme. This is why we feel like we have all the time in the world and every day lasts forever. When we become adults, especially adults that live in a capitalistic society, the principle of scarcity rules over us. This is why we feel like we never have enough time, enough whatever. So spend lots of time in nature. Spend time in abundance. Reclaim what is yours.

The TED story

I am just entering the TEDx world as a contributor. I have used TedTalks in my classes for at least five or six years. I am excited to see where this collaboration takes me. It feels good to move beyond consumption and into production and contribution.

Dancing. It's in my blood. The percussion of my heart links me to all forms of dance and it was, and remains, my first true love.
