Bio

Alexis Bernard, Ph.D. “Head of Operations & Chief of Staff†Nokia Research Center, Nokia Dr. Alexis Bernard is the “Chief of Staff†as well as “Head of Operations†of the Nokia Research Center (NRC) whose mission is to explore technology frontiers and solve scientific challenges today enabling Nokia to deliver irresistible personal experiences tomorrow. In his function as Head of Operations, Alexis is responsible for NRC • Long term strategy (e.g. research portfolio composition, product transfer strategy); • External & internal promotion (e.g., Nokia World, press events, demo days); • Open Innovation collaboration with world leading research institutions (e.g. MIT, Stanford); • Overall operations (e.g., reporting, facilities, employee communications) In his rols as “Chief of Staffâ€, Alexis is responsible globally to • Coordinate NRC activities across all 11 NRC locations worldwide • Provide leadership to several of NRC “special projects†requiring particular attention • Represent all NRC activities to internal & external stakeholders Prior to joining Nokia, Alexis spent five years in the New York office of the management consulting Firm McKinsey & Company, New York, where he was responsible for advising respected high-tech and telecommunications institutions with enhanced focus on strategy, marketing and operations. Before his McKinsey career, Alexis held several high profile technology research positions at world-class institutions including Alcatel Telecom (Antwerp, Belgium), Texas Instruments (Dallas, TX) and Audience (Mountain View, CA) in the fields of digital communication and speech technologies. Alexis holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as well as a B.S. in Electrical Engineering/ B.A. in Philosophy (summa cum laude) from the University of Louvain (Belgium). He has published numerous book chapters and refereed journal publications, frequently presents at international conferences and is the author of six international patents. His primary research interest includes: wireless telecommunications, information theory, channel coding, speech recognition, speech coding, distributed systems and cryptography. Alexis is the recipient of University of California scholarship for academic excellence and the IEEE Belgium medal for research merit. He was named Fellow of the BAEF (Belgian American Educational Foundation) and is a member of IEEE. Alexis is based at Nokia U.S. headquarters in White Plains, NY and resides in New York City.
