The TED story
I discovered TED.com thanks to my son, Luke, a graduate student in San Diego. He casually mentioned it during a home visit as something he'd come to love, and once I watched my first TED talk, I was hooked.
I remember watching Ken Robinson's TED talk on schools stunting kids' creativity and right away I felt the power of this new medium -- the TED talk. I recognized it as a new, informal, presentational style of communication serving up newly born knowledge that begs deeply interesting questions.
The blend of content and technology make TED-style talks perfect for high school students to try, if enough time, support, and guidance are provided. For the past four years students have delivered talks in my classroom as part of an annual Talk Project. Student talks are uploaded to YouTube for publication, and are also posted on our classroom blog site and on Flipboard.
