Rachel Sussman is a contemporary artist based in Brooklyn. For over a decade she has been on a quest to track down and photograph the oldest living things in the world -- continuously living organisms 2000 years old and older. For this, she has been working with scientists and traveled to every continent, including Antarctica, bringing back an amazing collection of images including a Japanese cedar, predatory fungus, coral, clonal aspen, baobabs, subzero bacteria, and the visible canopy of an underground forest. A photographic celebration of the resilience of life, her book, The Oldest Living Things in the World, was published in 2014, and her solo exhibition of the work is traveling. She is currently developing new installation work deepening her explorations of personal and cosmic time, the universe, nature, philosophy, and beauty.
