Bio
Dr. Steiner is currently Director of Learning and Impact at the Omidyar Network where he works across strategic initiatives and with the board to build a best in class learning organization. Previously, he served for nearly a decade at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, culminating in a position as Deputy Director and Founding Member of the Agricultural Development Initiative at the foundation’s Global Development Program. As Deputy Director, Dr. Steiner managed a professional team responsible for a $400M grant portfolio in the area of sustainable farmer productivity that included irrigation and water management, seed systems, agronomy, farmer organizations, gender, human capital and Information Communication Technology initiatives. Moreover, he has conceptualized and helped develop innovative initiatives including the Agricultural Transformation Agency of Ethiopia, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (chaired by Kofi Annan) and the Digital Soil Map of Africa.
Prior to the foundation, Dr. Steiner was Founder and CEO of Cyberplex Africa, one of the largest web development companies in southern Africa. Focused on developing and delivering web-based solutions and knowledge management systems, Dr. Steiner rapidly developed a team of 45 professionals with offices in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. Among his projects include founding one of the first online payment system platforms in Africa (QuickPay), and serving as Lead Developer of HIV/AIDS program management for the Centers on Disease Control.
