Bio
Carina Rosanna Tautu is an award winning filmmaker (director/screenwriter/cinematographer) whose work weaves elements of her Romanian/Greek/Sicilian storytelling roots with modern American culture. She sees herself as an "integrator" who's cinematic work aims to act a bridge between different cultures and sub-cultures revealing the strongest but most fragile human potential: compassion.
Her films aired nationally on PBS and IFC and screened at film festivals internationally. She worked in productions in Eastern Europe, Europe, South America, Africa and the U.S.
Her explorations of female existence in both fiction films and documentaries have depth and wicked humor, presenting life as visually beautiful with a touch of detached, existential dread. Her roots run deep in traditional Romanian and Balkan folklore, but her inspiration draws energy from many traditions - Pagan, Sufi, African, Indian, Native American or Asian tales.
She is a storyteller and story-maker who uses the modern means of cinema to walk the path of what Native Americans once upon a time called "the ants" - someone who wanders the world gathering stories from all tribes and sharing them further for the growth of future generations.
One of the 10 filmmakers selected for the short Film Film Station at Berlinale Talents 2013 as the new faces of international cinema, Carina recently relocated to Los Angeles founding Silk String Pictures - her stand for "cinema without borders".
I'm passionate about
You. Life. Cinema. Spreading compassion. World folktales. Shamanism. Neuroscience. Ashtanga yoga. How to stop violence on all levels, especially against women. Solving human trafficking. Empowering men using ways that avoid pushing them into the "hero" archetype. Teaching ethics to scientists. Teaching in general. Stopping human trafficking. Meditation. Making and owning one's emotional connection to other humans and the world in general.
An idea worth spreading
0. Dreaming is an art that can be taught. 1. The heart is brave, the mind is fearful. (There is no fear in the heart; when fearful - except for life threatening situations - you know the mind is most probably playing at trick on you). 2. Someone should sponsor a PR campaign making being un-compassionate out of fashion - if we did it with smoking, we can do it with compassion too. Compassionate is the new strong&beautiful. 3. Authentic directorial vision is an answer to achieving diversity in film and TV.
