An idea worth spreading

Perfectionism: The Path to Success or an Invisible Obstacle? Society tells us from a young age that we must always do better. Higher grades, greater success, more flawless results... Over time, many people begin to fear making mistakes. The desire for success transforms into an unacknowledged compulsion to be perfect. Perfectionism is often seen as a positive trait. People praise disciplined, hardworking, and successful individuals by calling them "perfectionists." However, psychology shows us that this is not always true. There is a significant difference between a healthy desire for development and unhealthy perfectionism. The healthy approach is to try to do the best one can. Unhealthy perfectionism, on the other hand, is measuring one's worth solely by flawless results. Such a perspective can lead the individual to constantly feel inadequate. Because perfection is not an attainable goal, but a line that constantly recedes. The most interesting point is this: Perfectionism often does not increase success; on the contrary, it can hinder action. A lot of people say, "I'm not good enough yet." he does not share his ideas with his thought, cannot complete his projects, or begins to postpone his dreams. The fear of making mistakes prevents productive action. This situation becomes especially pronounced in young people. Social media constantly showcases success stories and seemingly perfect lives. People compare their own real lives with the best moments of others. As a result, many young people constantly feel incomplete. However, scientific studies show that one of the most important parts of learning is making mistakes. The brain develops through the processes of experimentation, feedback, and correction. Mistakes are not only failures, but also the fundamental mechanism of learning. For this reason, perhaps we need to redefine success. Success is not about not making mistakes at all; it is about being able to continue learning without being afraid of making mistakes. Aiming for development rather than perfection can increase both individual happiness and productivity. The core message of this conversation is: Perfectionism is often fueled not by a love of success but by the fear of failure. True development, however, is not possible through striving for perfection, but through daring to learn and grow. Perhaps the ideas that will change the world will not come from the most perfect-looking people; they will come from those who are not afraid to make mistakes. That's why the question that young people should ask themselves is "Am I perfect?" it's not, "Did I improve a little more today than yesterday?" it must be.

The TED story
