Bio

JiaYan Shiis a Chinese lawyer and community builder whose work explores how individuals grow within complex systems. Trained in civil and commercial law, she began her career in Chengdu, working on litigation and transactional matters ranging from property disputes and divorce cases to creditor claims and tort liability. Early on, she became interested not only in legal outcomes, but in the structural forces shaping them — how institutions distribute power, how rules create incentives, and how individuals navigate environments that often feel rigid and hierarchical. She later served as a judicial assistant intern in the Civil Division of the Chenghua District People’s Court, where she supported judges in first-instance civil cases and observed the legal system from the inside. This dual perspective — as both advocate and court insider — deepened her understanding of law as a living structure balancing fairness, efficiency, and social stability. Beyond her legal practice, she founded TEDxWangjiang St., creating a local platform for intellectual exchange and meaningful social connection. As an invited TEDx speaker, she addressed structural pressures faced by young lawyers, examining power asymmetry and limited mobility within the profession, while encouraging strategic thinking, resilience, and long-term growth. She believes reading and writing are the inner architecture of reflection, while travel and hiking are ways of exploring the world beyond. Across law, community, and public dialogue, her work is guided by a simple question: how can people create space for growth within systems that were not originally designed for them?
