About Geetha

Bio

I am Geetha Sundar, an educationist and school leader with over 28 years of experience working with learners across age groups, cultures, and curricula. My journey began in the classroom, where I learned that every child brings a unique story, pace, and potential to learning. Those early years shaped my belief that education must be humane, inclusive, and meaningful—not limited to marks or examinations. Over time, my role expanded from teaching to academic leadership, allowing me to influence learning beyond a single classroom. Today, as the Principal of an Advaita International School, I lead with the conviction that empowered teachers create thriving students, and strong school cultures are built on trust, empathy, and shared purpose. I believe education must prepare young people not just for academic success, but for life—by nurturing curiosity, critical thinking, emotional resilience, and values. Even after nearly three decades in education, I remain a learner at heart, driven by the belief that purposeful education has the power to transform individuals and shape a better future.

I'm passionate about

I am passionate about education that goes beyond textbooks and examinations—education that prepares children not just to succeed academically, but to understand the world they live in and their role within it. For me, education has always been about nurturing thinking, compassionate, and responsible human beings who are equipped to face real-world challenges with confidence, ethics, and resilience. Having spent over 28 years in education, working with learners across age groups and cultures, I have seen first hand that meaningful learning happens when students are encouraged to connect knowledge with life. I am deeply passionate about helping students see relevance in what they learn—why it matters, how it applies, and how it can be used to solve problems they encounter in society. When learning is contextual, purposeful, and reflective, students move from memorizing information to becoming thoughtful problem-solvers and active contributors. I am equally passionate about empowering teachers, because I believe that inspired and supported educators are the foundation of any successful education system. Teachers shape not only academic understanding, but also attitudes, values, and self-belief. Throughout my journey—from the classroom to school leadership—I have worked closely with teachers to help them grow in confidence, clarity, and professional purpose. I strongly believe that when teachers feel trusted, valued, and equipped, they create classrooms that are emotionally safe, intellectually stimulating, and deeply human. As a school leader and Principal of an International School, I am passionate about building strong school cultures rooted in trust, empathy, and shared responsibility. I have learned that school culture teaches as powerfully as curriculum. When values are lived every day—through relationships, conversations, and choices—students internalize them naturally. Such environments allow students to develop emotional intelligence, ethical awareness, and respect for diversity, which are essential qualities for future citizens. I am passionate about holistic education that balances academic rigor with emotional well-being, character development, and life skills. In a rapidly changing world, students need far more than subject knowledge. They need the ability to think critically, collaborate across differences, adapt to change, and act with integrity. I believe schools must intentionally create opportunities for students to engage with real-world issues, ask meaningful questions, and explore solutions—so they grow into individuals who are not afraid to take responsibility for the world they inherit. I am also passionate about helping students develop a strong sense of identity while becoming globally minded. Having worked with national and international curricula, I have seen the importance of blending global perspectives with local values. Education should help students remain rooted in who they are, while being open, empathetic, and respectful toward others. This balance is essential in shaping citizens who can contribute positively to an interconnected world. At the heart of my passion is a deep belief that education is a powerful force for transformation—when it is guided by purpose, compassion, and vision. Even after nearly three decades in the field, I continue to learn, reflect, and evolve, because I believe that educators must remain learners first. My passion lies in shaping learning spaces where children feel seen, teachers feel empowered, and education becomes a preparation for life—not just a pathway to certificates.

An idea worth spreading

My idea emerges from decades in classrooms and school leadership. I believe education succeeds not when students merely master content, but when they learn to connect knowledge with real life. By empowering teachers and building school cultures rooted in trust and empathy, we create learning environments where students engage with real-world challenges, think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and act responsibly. Such education prepares young people not only for academic success, but for citizenship—equipping them with resilience, ethical awareness, and the confidence to contribute solutions to the world they will inherit.

The TED story

Initially, I didn’t know much about TED. In my previous school, I had the opportunity to train students for TED-style talks, and through that experience, I started exploring more TED Talks. I was deeply inspired by the ideas, stories, and energy of speakers from all over the world. When I became Principal at my current school, I realized I had the chance to bring TEDx to my own students. I applied for a TEDx license—and to my delight, it was granted! Hurray! I felt both honored and excited at the possibilities this would open for my students. I was also fortunate to attend a workshop organized by Mr. Will, an experienced TEDx organizer. That workshop deepened my understanding of the TEDx vision, and I realized that TEDx isn’t just about talks—it’s about inspiring young minds to share their ideas, take ownership, and connect with a wider community. Now, I am preparing to organize a TEDxYouth event with my students. This is not just an event; it is a journey of empowerment. It is an opportunity for students to step onto a stage, share their ideas, and realize that their voices matter. It’s about helping them see themselves as changemakers who can tackle real-world challenges—just as I have always believed education should do. Through this journey, I have come to see that TEDx is not just about talks—it’s about sparking curiosity, courage, and creativity in young people, and giving them the confidence to make a difference. And I am deeply passionate about being part of that transformation.

Things you might not know

People don’t know I am good at truly listening—to students, teachers, and colleagues—not just to their words, but to what they sometimes cannot express. Over the years, I have discovered that the quiet act of listening often reveals insights that no data or report can capture. I am also good at recognizing potential in students and educators long before they see it themselves, and at nurturing that potential through encouragement, guidance, and opportunities. I have a knack for turning complex challenges in education—whether in classrooms, curricula, or school leadership—into clear, practical solutions by bringing people together and building trust. I remain calm in moments of change and uncertainty, helping others feel confident and supported. Above all, I balance high expectations with empathy, believing that meaningful education happens when structure and humanity go hand in hand.
