About John

Bio

I’m probably the only person you know who’s been paid by Broadway to stay *off* the stage—ask me for the story. I got into development after more than a decade as a professional actor and musician, touring the country with Broadway, national tours, and performing off Broadway and regional theaters. I graduated from Southern Methodist University in 2010 and hold degrees in vocal performance and music education. Beyond that, I’m an occasional jingle writer and podcast editor and producer. Also an NASM Certified Personal Trainer with a joint mobility cert (FRCms). Born and bred Texan, I currently live in Chicago with my wife and I’m into weightlifting, hiking, dancing, obstacle course racing, mindfulness and brown liquor. Always and forever faithful to the San Francisco 49ers.

I'm passionate about

Health and movement, particularly strengthening joint mobility and strength training for the long-term, but also breathwork, vocal production, and expressing our full selves through our movement patterns. Remaining principled— what values do you hold that you apply equally to those both on your side *and* the other side? Showing up for those you love, and as much as possible, your broader community; making your words and commitments mean something Acquiring travel experiences with points and miles that you’d never be willing to pay for

An idea worth spreading

Fundamental to the project of free speech is humility. I think free speech – for a lot of various reasons – gets a bad rap, when at the end of the day, a principled commitment to freedom of speech means being willing to doubt and challenge your preconceptions, no matter how firmly held.

Things you might not know

Teaching! Actually have an education degree, though I never wanted to work in schools. I love sharing things I’ve learned with people who want to learn them. It’s also the absolute best way to gain insight into whether or not you really understand a topic or skill.
