Bio
Dr. Wolfgang Busch is Professor and Hess Chair in Plant Science at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, where he also serves as Director of the Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory. His research focuses on the genetic and molecular mechanisms that control root growth and development and plant environmental responses, with an emphasis on traits that enhance stress resilience and enable long-term carbon sequestration in soils.
A native of Germany, Dr. Busch studied biology at the University of Tübingen, where he earned his undergraduate degree and completed his Ph.D. at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology. During his studies, he also conducted research at the University of California, San Diego. After obtaining his Ph.D., he pursued postdoctoral research at Duke University in North Carolina. He then founded his own research group at the Gregor Mendel Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna in 2011 before joining the Salk Institute in 2017.
Dr. Busch co-founded and leads the Salk Harnessing Plants Initiative, an innovative program developing crop varieties with enhanced carbon removal capabilities, and is a co-founder of Cquesta, an AgriTech company advancing agricultural carbon sequestration solutions.
He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals and has been recognized with several awards, including the Society for Experimental Biology President’s Medal and the GenomeWeb Young Investigator Award.
Dr. Busch’s work bridges fundamental biological discovery and applied innovation, aiming to enhance the mechanistic understanding of fundamental processes that underlie the evolutionary success and the environmental resilience of plants, as well as to advance agricultural sustainability, climate change mitigation, and global food security.

With 1.6 billion hectares already planted annually, improved seeds have the potential to make a gigaton-scale climate impact—faster than any other carbon dioxide removal technology on the horizon.
