Bio

Katie Kim is a junior at Whitney High School. She first became a logistics intern for the TEDxWhitneyHigh conference in eighth grade and has since been making memories with the club and conference. When she’s not drafting emails for TEDx or studying at school, Katie enjoys preparing for Mock Trial with a team she loves wholeheartedly and appreciating anything poetry. Katie hopes to apply the knowledge she gains from this conference to her other passions, including her academics and her love for teaching younger children. Most importantly, she hopes that her future self will remember to look back on this journey every once in a while and reflect on how hard work pays off and every experience has a lesson to take to heart.

I'm passionate about

poetry! It carries the sound of laughter and the silent streak of tears. The space between the lines and the details left unclear all tell a story that more words at times cannot.

An idea worth spreading

Understanding the value of the humanities in an increasingly high-tech and STEM-focused world is vital. Beyond just the subjects, the skills we derive from the humanities impact large parts of our human relationships. Balance in our world is crucial, and that extends to how society perceives the two ends of the scale as well.

The TED story

TEDx conferences are not an easy endeavor with the countless hours of planning, writing, negotiating, changing, and training. Despite having a team, sometimes it can even be a lonely process to take on individually. I first joined TEDxWhitneyHigh in eighth grade because I yearned for a sense of belonging and wanted the experience of watching a show come together from backstage. I learned so much about the process of building a stage and a conference of two-hours, and I found myself growing right alongside it! A TEDx conference, I realized, is like a book; even if it feels like the same story, there are new details you find every time you read it.

Things you might not know

trying concoctions of food! I like trying new things, even though I'm well aware of not playing with food. I'll try silly little pairings when I'm with my close friends or family, and more often than not I find them delicious! Personally, I recommend trying salted sweet potato chips with mangos after an hour of swimming for a start.
