Jihoon Choi

Hello! I'm Jihoon, Korean, 13, who is an enthusiastic multi-hobbier(is that even a word?). I have this cycle of either cubing all day, playing chess , playing soccer, making stuff(like paper airplanes, lego transformers), writing poetry, studying(ehem), or playing pokemon cards. I have all these hobbies of interest that rotate every one to seven months. These days, I'm interested in Hagwons, which is a specialized institution that 'helps' students in getting good test scores in Korea. I want to criticize them(read "An idea worth spreading' for more info) because they force students to study until like 11PM in their institutions. So I would like to major in social psychology, or just psychology to publish a paper about the detrimental effects they bring. Well, so as you saw above, I'm quite an active person who can't stay still. I hope to make friends, have social relationships, and spread TED ideas through the translation role I have right now.

Life

The problem with Hagwons, which is a specialized after-school institutions where students are forced to study until like 11PM. This is a reality that many Korean students(even 9-year olds) have to face. This is very sad, and I am sure many of you can emphasize. But not the majority of Korean parents. Most of them think sending their child to hagwons are for the benefit of their children, and I know that this mindset is unchangeable because Korean society is based on grades, scores, which I think are very irrelevant in society. Hagwons contribute to decreasing creativity of young Korean's minds, and I hope to fix this through programs which I hope to join/make later.
