Bio
Dr. Ron Bonnstetter serves as the senior vice president of research and development for Target Training International, Ltd. and Executive Director of the Mind Science Center. He is also a professor emeritus of University of Nebraska – Lincoln. A well-respected speaker and presenter, Dr. Bonnstetter regularly speaks in front of national and international audiences.
Current research pursuits include the development of biology-based communication strategies, peak performance and the brain, development of personal attribute soft skills, and brain-based findings that inform human interactions. His cutting-edge Prefrontal Cortex Gamma Asymmetry research is impacting ipsative assessments and appraisal research protocols world-wide.
Dr. Bonnstetter has amassed an arsenal of recognition and research even before entering the field of cognitive neurology, including the first recipient of the National Senior Outstanding Science Educator of the Year Award and the only secondary science preparation program recognized in the national Search for Excellence in Science Education. His current gamma asymmetry electroencephalography (EEG) research has resulted in two patents. Plus, he was honored with the 2019 Joe Kamiya First-Person Science Award during the annual conference of the International Society of Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR). This award is named in honor of Dr. Joe Kamiya who was the first to document the ability to noninvasively alter brain wave activity by using a simple reward system and is considered the father of modern neurofeedback.
Dr. Bonnstetter’s publications, while at Target Training International, Ltd., have focused on combining social and behavioral science with a neurological focus. His work has been featured in:
* Harvard Business Review
* Education Weekly
* Clinical EEG and Neuroscience
* American Society for Engineering Education
* Neuro Connections
* NeuroRegulation
* Biofeedback
* Advances in Body-Mind Medicine
* Counseling Today
Dr Bonnstetter was also honored with the 2024 Gold medal by the National Book Awards Association for his co-authored book titled “The Five Sciences of Self” in the category of Entrepreneurial Business, as well as a Bronze medal for Inspirational literature.

The TED story
We each are a combination of nature and nurture. The degree of influence from both can be debated, but the fact is, are behaviors and even our emotional responses are shaped by numerous factors. My story will focus on how some of my own nurturing experiences have shaped who I am and what I have accomplished. My hope is that these events will trigger similar experiences in others and lay the groundwork for their own reflections. Sadly, our life journey happens for the most part without our awareness. Only upon reflection can we start to gain an understanding of how we got to this point in time.
As I learn more about how the brain learns and how memories are formed, I understand, and want my readers to know, that my recollections are all tied to personal emotional triggers. In addition, I also understand that memories may or may not have any barring in reality. They are real to the holder, but what is real and what is fantasy is in the eye of the beholder. With that said, these are my memories and they have a foundation in my perceived reality. Time will tell if they have a similar effect on you.
My goal is to share parts of my journey to help others begin to unpack your own. I believe that we each must strive for greater self-awareness, before we can embrace our full potential.
Let the journey begin.
Things you might not know
One of my hobbies that seems pertinent to this application is my love of music. I play in three bell choirs as well as playing Native American style flutes. My love of learning has led to my certification as a clinical therapeutic musician. This training allows me to provide comfort in hospice, rest homes and hospital settings. By combining my neurology background and my love of music, I am able to once again bridge diverse fields and connect with humanity in unique and very personal ways.
It is difficult to explain the feeling I experience while helping a fellow human exist this world while listening to the ethereal rhythmic sound of a flute that is matched to the patients physical and mental state.
