Bio

Dr. Paule Joseph is a board-certified Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Scientist. She earned her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Nursing Research. She currently serves as Senior Investigator, Distinguished Senior Lasker Clinical Research Scholar, and Chief of the Section of Sensory Science and Metabolism at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Her expertise lies in chemosensation—specifically taste, smell, and chemesthesis—and their impact on ingestive behaviors. Dr. Joseph's research spans preclinical, clinical, and translational studies aimed at enhancing the understanding, diagnosis, prevention, and management of chemosensory disorders, particularly in relation to metabolic conditions like obesity and brain diseases such as alcohol and substance use disorders. Her investigations have also examined the effects of COVID-19 on sensory experiences, showcasing her commitment to advancing knowledge in this critical area.

An idea worth spreading

In the face of growing health challenges like neurodegenerative diseases, alcohol dependence, and obesity, I invite you to explore , "Rediscovering Well-Being Through Our Forgotten Senses," where we acknowledge the overlooked potential of our senses of taste and smell in enhancing, health, well-being and innovating across industries. This proposal not only advocates for re-engaging with these senses to enhance well-being and spur innovation across sectors but also emphasizes the critical need for developing comprehensive testing, guidelines, and therapies. By establishing robust testing protocols and therapeutic interventions for taste and smell disorders, we can pave the way for personalized health strategies and disease prevention. My idea calls for the development of standardized guidelines that can guide healthcare professionals in diagnosing, treating, and managing these sensory impairments. Incorporating these senses into the broader health narrative encourages a holistic approach to well-being, fostering innovation from immersive experiences in entertainment to tailored product designs in food production. Imagine the innovative concept of "sensory cinemas," where audiences are not merely passive viewers but are fully engaged through curated scents and flavors that complement the visual and auditory storytelling. My idea is a call to action for researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers and industries to harness the power of taste and smell for personal health advancements and also as a way to drive technological and creative breakthroughs, advocating for a sensory revolution that redefines our interaction with the world and addresses pressing global challenges.
